Native to Australia, these annuals, perennials and low shrubs grow to 30-90 cm (12-36 in) and are well suited for borders and as groundcovers. The ball-like flowers appear in clusters at the ends of the stems.

Species

C. brownii has grayish branches and tiny, thin, silvery white leaves which form a silvery clump to about 45 cm (18 in), decorated with white, ball-like flowers in summer. As it is salt- and wind-resistant, it is especially suitable for seaside gardens.

Cultivation

In frost-prone areas, grow in a cool, light and airy greenhouse. Outdoors, Calocephalus likes an open, sunny position and sandy loam. To propagate, take cuttings 5 cm (2 in) long and remove the white fluff from the lower part. Plant in a mixture of sand and peat in late summer.
