Native to small areas of Australian coastal rainforest from central Queensland to northern New South Wales, this handsome evergreen tree grows to about 8 m (26 ft). It has striking golden-orange flower spikes in early summer and glossy, heart-shaped leaves. It is unlikely to be available in the US.
Species
B. syringifolia, gold blossom tree, is the only species of this genus. The stiff, bright gold flower spikes are shown to perfection against the dark green foliage.
Cultivation
Barklya needs fertile, well-drainec soil, full sun and adequate water in summer. Pruning is recommended to encourage a good shape. Propagate from seed or semi-ripe cuttings in autumn. It would need glass protection in frost-prone climates.
Climate
Thrives in the subtropics and tropics.
