Applying for Funding

If you're thinking of enrolling on a postgraduate course, there are a number of organisations that offer funding. These include:

  • Research Councils such as the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) offer studentships and grants to cover course fees and the cost of living.
  • Charities and charitable trusts such as the Wellcome Trust provide support for medical research.
  • Institutions such as the British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering and Royal Society offer awards.
  • A number of government departments offer funding for postgraduate studies in a specific area, for example research into town planning.
  • Colleges and universities may have their own studentships and bursaries for postgraduate students.
Competition for funding is often intense, and even students with first class honours degrees may be unsuccessful.
