Adult Learning Grants

The Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a means tested grant, providing a weekly payment to adults studying full-time for a first Level 2 qualification (five GCSEs or equivalent) or for a first Level 3 qualification (two A levels or equivalent). The ALG is normally available for up to two years but can be extended to three years if the learner takes a Level 2 course before progressing to a Level 3 course.

The Adult Learning Grant is being piloted in the following local Learning and Skills Council areas:

  • Bedfordshire & Luton
  • Berkshire
  • Black Country
  • County Durham
  • Devon & Cornwall
  • Hampshire & the Isle of Wight
  • Humberside
  • Kent and Medway
  • Lancashire
  • Leicestershire
  • London West
  • Milton Keynes
  • Northumberland
  • Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire
  • Shropshire
  • South Yorkshire
  • Surrey
  • Sussex

To be eligible for a grant, students must be studying within the specified pilot areas, and fulfil the following criteria:

  • Must be aged 19 or over if studying for their first full Level 2 qualification.
  • Must be aged 19 to 30 if studying for their first full Level 3 qualification.
  • Must be studying full-time (at least 12 hours per week).
  • Must not be receiving support from other government grants, training allowances or out of work benefits.
  • Must have normal residence in England.

Eligible students can receive up to £30 per week during term time, depending on their income. Students who live at their parent's home will not have their parent's income included as part of their assessment. However, those applicants who have a live-in partner will be assessed on the total of their joint income. The table below details the amounts available:

Students can apply for an ALG by collecting an application pack from participating colleges or by contacting learndirect. Students who do not apply at the start of their course may be able to make a retrospective claim that can be backdated to the start of the term in which they applied.

The ALG is designed to help those students who did not succeed in their initial education and want to get the qualifications they need for their future careers.
