Advanced Extension Awards (AEAs) are designed for the most gifted advanced level students - the top 10% of candidates.
AEAs are based on advanced GCE subjects and require no additional content to be taught. They test the candidates' depth of understanding and their ability to think creatively and critically. Students are also tested on their ability to demonstrate an understanding of the connections between different elements of the subject.
The qualifications help to differentiate between the most able candidates, particularly in subjects with a high proportion of A grades at advanced GCE. Qualifications are awarded as Distinctions (worth 40 UCAS points) and Merits (20 UCAS points).
