Entry Level Qualifications

Entry level is the first level in the national qualifications framework, and is pitched below grade G of a GCSE, NVQ level 1 or vocational qualifications at level 1. The level is divided into three sub-levels: entry 1, entry 2 and entry 3, broadly equivalent to Keys Stages 1, 2 and 3. The highest sub-level is entry 3, designed to help candidates progress to related level 1 qualifications.

Entry Level Certificates are offered in a broad range of subjects, such as maths, literacy and life skills, and are designed for the following types of learner:

14-16 year olds not working at GCSE level
adults with little formal education seeking to improve their basic skills
learners of any age who have a weakness in a given area, such as numeracy or literacy
adults planning to return to employment who want to gain skills in a particular vocational area or general skill area

What are Entry Level Skills?

Entry level qualifications recognise basic skills and knowledge and the ability to apply learning in everyday situations under direct guidance or supervision.

Learning at this level involves building basic skills and knowledge and is not geared towards specific occupations.

Entry level candidates usually pursue these qualifications in schools or Further Education colleges, but courses may also be found in pupil referral units, prisons and Young Offenders' Institutions, through voluntary work or in residential care settings.
