Level 7 and 8 Qualifications

Postgraduate education is available to any student who has obtained a good undergraduate degree. The courses tend to be divided into those that are mainly taught and those that are research based. The majority of programmes are designed to enable students to undertake study or research in their subject at a deeper level than is offered at undergraduate level; there are also a number of vocational postgraduate courses, which provide access to specific professions, such as the PGCE for teaching or the Common Professional Exam for law.

Level 7 qualifications recognise highly developed and complex levels of knowledge which enable the learner to give in-depth and original responses to unpredictable and complicated situations and problems. Learning at this level involves the demonstration of high level specialist professional knowledge and is appropriate for senior professionals and managers. Qualifications include:

  • Postgraduate certificates
  • PGCEs
  • Postgraduate diplomas
  • Master's degrees

Level 8 qualifications recognise leading practitioners or experts in a particular field. Learning at this level involves the development of new and creative approaches that redefine or extend existing knowledge or professional practice. Qualifications include:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
