University and College Checklist

Before applying for a higher education course, there are a number of things you need to consider; we've put together a handy checklist to help you assess each institution you're interested so that you can compare it to others.

The Course

  • What will you be studying - is the course outline or syllabus readily available?
  • How will you be taught? Lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical work?
  • How many students are there in an average class?
  • What is the percentage of mature students on the course?
  • How will you be assessed? By exam, continual assessment? A mixture of both?

Performance

  • What is the quality of teaching and research at the institution?
  • How does your chosen course rate?
  • What percentage of students complete their studies?
  • What's the pass rate for examinations?
  • Is the degree classification method made clear to students?

Qualifications

  • What do people do with this qualification?
  • How many students progress to further study or related employment?

Finance

  • How much are the fees?
  • How much is accommodation (both university and private sector)?
  • How much is the cost of living in that part of the country?
  • What bursaries are available from the institution?

Support

  • Is there a regular system of tutorials?
  • Does the institution provide a Student Services department offering counselling, financial advice or careers guidance?
  • Is there specific support available for any disability, learning difficulties or health issue that you may have?
  • Does the institution welcome adult learners?
  • Are there additional services for adults returning to learning, such as study skills courses?
  • Is there additional language or learning support available?

The Facilities

  • If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, are the buildings accessible?
  • Is there a library and IT facilities? Are they open at reasonable times?
  • Are there facilities on campus that you find important, such as a medical practice, banks, pharmacies, bars, eating areas, newsagents, bookshops or cafes?
  • Are there facilities for extra-curricular activities such as sport?
  • Is there a student coffee bar or common room in the department?
  • Are there childcare facilities available? Is it a nursery or crèche? What's the criteria and cost for using them?
  • Are the buildings well maintained or in need of repair?

The Atmosphere

  • Does the college offer a welcoming and friendly environment?
  • Does it have a good 'feel' about it?
  • Could you see yourself living there for the next three (or more) years?
