Developing your child's problem solving skills and their ability to think logically can greatly increase their chances of learning in their subjects across the board. Whilst some children have a better understanding of numbers and logic than others, you can boost their motivation and skills by providing opportunities for them to explore these concepts at home. Why not try the following ideas?
- Measure their height and work out how much they've grown.
- Ask your child to help you in the kitchen - they'll have great fun measuring, weighing and timing. For example, ask them to work out ingredient amounts if a recipe is doubled.
- When you're out shopping, ask them to help you weigh out fruit and vegetables, work out how much things will cost, and find the relative value of products by comparing weight and prices.
- Play games on car journeys:
- Count the number of red cars
- Look out for number plates in which the numbers add to up a certain figure; for example, EA52 LYZ adds up to 7 (5+2)
- Pub cricket - count up the number of 'legs' on each pub sign you see; for example, the Red Lion counts for 4, the Cow and Calf for 8 and the Royal Oak for 0.
- Think about speed - ask your child to work out your average speed by giving them the distance you have travelled and the time it has taken. Or ask them how long it will take to get to your destination if you travel at a particular speed.
- Make origami shapes and models.
- Look at maps together - work out how to get to a particular place.
