Art and Design

During key stage 2, pupils begin to develop their imagination and creativity through more complex activities. These activities help to build on their skills and improve their control of materials, tools and techniques. They increase their awareness of the purposes and roles of art, craft and design in different cultures and times. They become more confident in using a range of different elements, materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think.

Children are taught to:

  • explore and develop ideas
  • collect visual and other information in a sketchbook
  • mix different materials, tools and techniques to achieve effects
  • combine texture, pattern, colour, line, tone, shape, form and space
  • review their own and others' work and discuss what they think and feel about it
  • investigate the purposes and roles of designers, artists and craftspeople in different cultures and times

At the end of Key Stage 2 (age 11), most children are able to:

  • gather information that will help them to develop ideas
  • combine materials, tools and techniques to communicate their ideas
  • discuss art works, and consider how place and time affect the ideas and methods used
  • adapt and improve their own work
