Music

During key stage 2, pupils are taught to sing songs and play instruments with increasing confidence, skill, expression and awareness. They improvise, and develop their own musical compositions, and explore their thoughts and feelings regarding a variety of music from different times and cultures.

Children are taught:

  • how to sing and play musical instruments in a controlled way
  • how to perform music in groups
  • to see how their own contribution makes a difference to the whole performance
  • to express their ideas and feelings through their own music
  • to listen to many different types of music
  • how music is created and used

At the end of Key Stage 2 (age 11), most children are able to:

  • make up their own pieces of music
  • express themselves in their singing
  • sing in tune
  • be aware of how their own part fits into a group performance
  • understand how all the parts of the performance fit together
  • talk and write about music using musical terms
  • improve their own and others' work
