During key stage 2, pupils learn new physical skills, and find out how to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy collaborating and competing with each other and develop an understanding of how to succeed in different activities. They also learn how to prepare for and recover from exercise, and what happens to their body when they work out in a variety of ways.
Children are taught to:
- create and perform dances from different cultures
- express ideas and feelings through movement
- play and invent games to score points or goals against others
- make up and perform sequences of movements, still shapes and balanced poses, both on the floor and using apparatus
- float and move in water using skills such as:
- sculling
- treading water
- front crawl
- back crawl
- understand safety rules so that they can be confident when in or on water.
- run, jump and throw
- find their way using maps and diagrams
- overcome problems and physical challenges.
At the end of Key Stage 2 (age 11), most children are able to:
- get involved in physical activity in their own time
- join skills together for an activity in a smooth, fluid way
- compose and perform dances and gymnastic sequences
- understand how to use rules and tactics in competitive games and activities
- say how to practise and prepare for activity safely
- explain how exercise affects their bodies and how it helps to keep them healthy and fit
