Information and Communication Technology

During key stage 1, pupils explore Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and learn how to use it confidently. They start to use ICT to develop their ideas and record their creative work. They become familiar with hardware and software, such as the Internet, email, recording equipment, digital cameras and scanners.

Children are taught to:

  • use ICT to find out information, and then to share and exchange it
  • become familiar with some hardware and software - for example, learning how to use a word processor and 'paint' software.
  • store information on computers
  • present stored information in different ways
  • talk about how ICT can be used both in and out of school

At the end of Key Stage 1 (age 7), most children are able to:

  • use ICT to handle information in different ways, including gathering it, storing it, organising it and presenting it to others
  • feel comfortable using computer software in their everyday work
  • use programmable toys, putting together computerised instructions in the right order
  • explore what happens using ICT
