If the couple wishes to make a formal public announcement of the event, an engagement announcement can be placed in a local newspaper. The bride's parents usually place the notice not more than a year before the wedding. If the groom's parents live in another part of the country, they may wish to place the same or a similar announcement in a newspaper in their area. It is not appropriate to send out engraved or printed cards announcing the engagement, as that may be seen as a solicitation of gifts.
