The most popular recreational maps for the UK are published by the Ordnance Survey and are available in the following 2 formats:
1. Explorer Maps (1:25 000)
The best choice for cyclists, riders, walkers and other outdoor enthusiasts, with a scale of 4 cm to 1 km (2.5 inches to 1 mile). There are 403 maps covering the whole of Great Britain, all of which include information about rights of way, picnic areas and viewpoints, camping and caravan sites and selected tourist information. Many of the range are also available in a tough, durable and weatherproof plastic coating - ideal for the outdoors!
2. Landranger Maps (1:50 000)
A good all-purpose map, with a scale of 2 cm to 1 km (1.25 inches to 1 mile). There are 204 maps covering the whole of Great Britain, each comprising of a 40 km by 40 km (25 miles by 25 miles) area. All include information about rights of way, picnic areas and viewpoints, camping and caravan sites and selected places of interest. The Landranger map range is also available to buy on CD, which can be downloaded to PDAs and laptops and used in conjunction with Global Positioning Systems.There are a total of 12 CDs to cover all of Britain.
Northern Ireland is covered by 17 maps at this same scale in a range called 'Discoverer'.
