Map Symbols

Owing to the limited space available on detailed maps, a standard set of symbols and abbreviations are used to represent features on the ground, including boundaries, sites of historical interest, land features, natural features, public rights of way, railways, roads and paths, tourist information, and vegetation. A key to the symbols from these categories, commonly used on Ordnance Survey maps (1:50000 and 1:25000), forms the basis of this section.
