A method of software distribution whereby a trial version is distributed in advance without the need for payment. If the user likes the program and decides to keep it, they are expected to register the program with its creator for a small fee. If they decide not to register, they are expected to remove the from their system, and pass it on to another user - thus the 'share' in shareware.
