A unit of data measurement equal to approximately one million bytes. The exact number can be any one of the following:
- 1,048,576 bytes (2 to the power of 20)
Used for nearly all discussions of computer memory and file storage. Most software also uses this definition to express storage capacity.
- 1,000,000 bytes (10 to the power of 6)
Used primarily for most storage media, particularly hard drives and DVDs, and also with many other computing uses such as CPU clock speeds or measures of performance.
- 1,024,000 bytes
Used rarely in a small number of storage contexts, most notably the "1.44 MB" high-density floppy diskette, which contains 1.44 x 1,024,000 bytes (i.e. 1,474,560 bytes). See also Bit, Byte, Kilobyte and Gigabyte.
