A file extension (also known as a filename extension), is the suffix at the end of a filename, which indicates what kind of file it is. For example, the file "readme.doc" is a Microsoft Word document, "image.jpg" is a JPEG image file and "music.mp3" is an MPEG audio file.
There are tens of thousands of filename extensions, and whilst it's a good idea to learn the most commonly used, it would be impossible to remember them all. To help you out, we've put together a list of file extensions, grouped together by file type.
