 I have just downloaded a number of files and programs, but I couldn't find them after the download was complete. What happened?

Most download procedures allow you to select a location to save the file to before the download begins. When this option appears, select the name of the file and the "Save in" BEFORE clicking Save to start the download. It is recommended that you set up a Download directory, so that you will always be able to find your downloaded files and programs easily. If you cannot find the file, use the Search facility in your File Manager system.

Although no checking system can fully guarantee that a newly downloaded file is fully safe, following these guidelines can reduce the risk of running an infected file: - Run a virus check on any newly downloaded files.
- Make sure that you have configured your file manager to show all file extensions. Check that the file extension is what you expected it to be (e.g. mp3 for a music file or a jpg for an image). An unexpected file extension (such as an .exe or a .pif) may indicate that it is a virus or a Trojan horse.
- Open newly downloaded files in their associated program rather than opening them directly from your computer's file management system. For example, if you have downloaded a music file, open your audio application and then use its 'File/Open' function to open the file. If the file does not have the correct extension, then the program will not open it. Files that cannot be opened using the correct program should be deleted.
