Pledge for Online Safety

There are many rules that can be used to establish how children use the Internet, but the most important rule is that parents and kids agree to a formal set of criteria.

The following pledge is just one example of the guidelines that can be agreed within the family; whatever rules you agree on, print them out and post them next to the computer so that they can be seen at all times.

MY PLEDGE

  • I will talk with my parents so that we can establish the ground rules for using the Internet. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online and appropriate areas and chat rooms for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.

  • I will not give out any personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents' work address or telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents' permission.

  • I will never send anybody my picture or anything else without checking this is OK with my parents.

  • I will tell my parents straightaway if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable or scared.

  • I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly damage our computer or jeopardise my family's privacy.

  • I will be a good Internet citizen and will not do anything that hurts other people. I will behave towards other people as I would like them to behave towards me.

  • I will not reply to any messages that are cruel or that make me feel uncomfortable. I understand that it is not my fault if I receive that type of message. If I do receive this kind of message, I will tell my parents straightaway so that they can contact the online service.

  • I will not agree to meet anybody I have got to know online without asking my parents first. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will make sure that it is in a public place and I will bring one of my parents with me.
