Whilst chatting on an instant messenger service can be fun and a great way to keep up with friends and work colleagues, you need to be aware that there are a number of safety and security risks involved. Follow these tips for keeping safe:
- Never list your screen name or e-mail address in public areas such as online community profiles or large Internet directories, and only give it out to people you trust.
- Do not enter details such as your name, gender, age, home address, phone number and e-mail address into your personal profile section, as this may allow stalkers, identity thieves or spammers to target you. Leave your IM profiles blank, and if a field must be filled in, use fictitious data.
- Never give out sensitive information such as passwords or your credit card details in an IM conversation, even to someone you know and trust - data transferred over instant messages is not secure.
- Avoid instant message viruses by refusing to click links in messages from people you don't know. You should also avoid opening pictures or downloading files unless they come from a trusted source and you have a means of virus checking them.
- If you connect to your IM client using a public computer, do not select the feature that allows you to log on automatically; other people who use that computer after you will be able to see your screen name and may be able to log in to your account.
- Only communicate with people who are on your contact or buddy lists.
- Avoid sending personal or private instant messages at work; your employer has the right to monitor and view those messages.
- If you decide to meet up with someone you have met through instant messaging, make sure you do so safely. Always meet in a public place such as a cafe, tell someone else your plans and if possible bring a friend along with you. If you are under 18, you must ask your parents' permission before you agree to meet up, and you MUST take a parent or other responsible adult along with you.
