Dealing with Abusive Chatters

Whilst the majority of people in chat rooms are friendly and willing to talk to anyone that joins in with the conversation, there are also a small minority of people with nothing better to do than try to spoil other users' enjoyment of a chat room by being abusive or offensive. However, never attempt to retaliate by being rude back; there are a number of other ways you can deal with these troublemakers without lowering yourself to their level.

However, before you get upset about a message that seems to be offensive - take another look at it - could the poster have actually meant something entirely more innocent? It can be difficult sometimes to extract the real meaning and intonation from plain text messages and what may look sarcastic or rude may have been said in fun. This is why it is important to use emoticons to express the correct tone so it is clear that you are being funny, serious or indeed sarcastic.

According to recent research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, readers of Internet text messages have only a 56% chance of correctly distinguishing sarcasm from seriousness.

Humour is often the best way to deal with someone who becomes abusive or insulting during a discussion. Failing that, simply ignore them by typing "/ignore <nickname>" in Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or using the 'Ignore' button in web-based chat rooms.

If you are concerned about abuse or harassment, think about using a moderated chat room; these are controlled by channel operators (Ops) who have the power to eject troublemakers out of chat rooms and can even ban them from entering that room ever again. You can also contact the Ops in a private message (PM) if another user becomes offensive, attacks you personally or engages in any form of harassment.

However, it's also important to remember that whilst you're communicating in the virtual on-line world YOU are in control of the computer - simply exit the program at any time you feel unhappy or uncomfortable.
