Children and Chat Rooms

by Edward Smith

It is estimated that over 6 million children in the UK surf the web every day and use the thousands of chat rooms that are on offer. Whilst chatrooms can offer kids a way to communicate with others with similar interests across the world, they have also been shown to be the source of potential danger to young people.

The majority of chat rooms have no form of age verification, so users can pretend to be any age they choose, which could allow someone who wishes to harm a child to cultivate a relationship in order to make contact offline.

However, by following the advice contained in this section, both children and parents can work together so that they become fully aware of the possible dangers and pitfalls of chat rooms, so that they may reduce any potential risks and increase their safety online.
