Is it safe to use chat rooms?
-
Yes - as long as you use common sense and use the Internet safely. Never give out any information that can identify you and don't believe everything you read.
-
How can I know if the person I am chatting to is genuine?
-
As you cannot see the person, this may be very difficult. It's is always better to remain cautious and not give too much away about yourself - after all you wouldn't give your personal details to a stranger you met in the street, so don't give them out to someone you meet online.
-
What are all the strange symbols I keep seeing in chat windows?
-
These are emoticons - a way of representing an emotion or expression in a text message. They can be used to show other users that you were joking :-) that you are sad :-( that you were being sarcastic :-P so that you can clarify the tone of your messages. Check out a full list here ...

Help! I've just received a message full of abbreviations and I don't understand what they mean!
-
Chat rooms rely on the use of abbreviations and acronyms to save keystrokes (and time) when typing messages. Although they may seem confusing at first, you'll soon get the hang of them. Some of the most common include: LOL (laugh out loud), BRB (be right back) and NP (no problem). Check out a full list here ...

What should I do if someone sends me an offensive message?
-
First of all, you should never respond directly to any offensive or abusive message. Place the person on 'ignore', inform Ops (if you are in a moderated chat room) or simply leave the chat room altogether.
-

What is IRC?
-
IRC stands for 'Internet Relay Chat'. It was originally written by Jarkko Oikarinen in 1988 and is now used in over 60 countries around the world. IRC is a multi-user chat system, where people meet on Channels (chat rooms) to talk in groups, or privately - usually with a certain topic of conversation. There is no restriction to the number of people that can participate in a given discussion, or the number of channels that can be formed on IRC.
-
How do I change my nickname?
-
Simply type /nick newnick. For example, /nick teadrinker will change your nickname to teadrinker.
-
How do I find my friend on IRC?
-
Type in:
/whois nickname
Information about your friend and the channel they are in will appear in your status box (as long as they are logged in and have not set their personal mode to invisible). You could also send them a message by typing:
/msg nickname <enter message>
For example /msg teadrinker what channel are you on teadrinker??
-
Can I chat with a person on a different network?
-
No. Each of the networks is totally independent and separate and cannot talk to one another. So if you're connected to DALnet you will not be able to chat to someone on EFnet.
-
Can I chat with a person on a different server?
-
Yes, as long as you are both on the same network, you will be able to chat to each other. Each network is composed of several servers, all connected to each other. All servers share the same information, and communicate with each other constantly.
-
What is Lag?
-
Lag is the delay in time it takes for your signal to reach another user; anything more than 10 seconds will cause difficulties in communications. Minimise lag by choosing a server that is geographically close to you. You can check your lag time by using a Ping command (/ctp nickname ping), where the nickname can be your name or another user. The ping response time will be in seconds and will appear in the status window.
-
What is a Netsplit?
-
A netsplit is the loss of communication between servers on a Network, which may be due to high server loads, loss of Internet communication links or a total or partial crash of the server itself. When a netsplit happens, large numbers of users will appear to leave the channel simultaneously. However, communications should eventually be re-established and all the users who were on the channel will be returned.

What is an Instant Messenger?
-
An Instant Messenger is a program that enables you to exchange short messages, files, and (depending on supported features) video and voice feed with your friends online in real time. The users must all be logged onto the Internet at the same time and use the same instant messenger provider.
-
How do I use an Instant Messenger program?
-
To use an instant messenger, you must first create an account and download the free software from a IM provider such as Yahoo!, Microsoft, ICQ or AOL. Once you have the software, install it and add the names of friends who use the same service to your contact list. Depending on the program you use, your friend may need to give permission before you can add them to your list. Then, whenever you open your IM program, you'll be able to see if any of your contacts are also online. Most programs will only allow you to send messages to online contacts, although some (such as Yahoo! and ICQ) offer you the option to send offline messages that will be delivered to your friend whenever they log back in.
