Sports Clubs or Gyms

Gyms have become one of the UK's favourite places to flirt and find love. Although they used to be the domain of the ultra-fit or the ulta-posey, gyms now cater for a wide range of people, all with the positive intention of looking and feeling better about themselves. There are a wide variety of conversation starters available to you: ask them how a certain machine or piece of equipment works, how often they work out or whether they'd like to try out the new protein shake at the juice bar. However, if you try to strike up a conversation with someone you find attractive and they give you the brush off (no matter how politely), drop your advance then and there and let them get on with exercising.

In addition to gym work, many clubs also offer social evenings, such as parties, picnics or barbeques; this will give you the opportunity to chat to people in a more social setting and many new friendships have been made in this way. Do bear in mind however, that a year's gym membership can cost around the same as one of the top dating agencies, so it's certainly not worth joining if you hate exercising. If you do enjoy keeping fit, a gym can be a great way to widen your social circle as well as making you feel better about yourself.

There's a fine line between catching an admiring glance of someone working out in front of you and leering - don't get caught gaping, it's embarrassing as well as creepy.

For those people who don't have the money or time to invest in a gym membership, there are other ways to use sporting interests to provide a release from your everyday life and as a way to meet new people. Whether it's supporting your local football team, going to the races or taking up something completely new such as T'ai chi, it's easy to find out what sporting activities are going on in your area through your local paper or library.

There are also 'activity clubs' (such as the Intervarsity Club - IVC) designed to cater for a range of tastes and people from all walks of life. They are often set up as a place for like-minded single people and couples to meet up and take part in activities including sporting, recreational, cultural and social events. You often don't even need to be into sports, just be prepared to join in. Not only can these clubs provide you with a wide social network and an easy way to make new friends, but they are a great way to get you out and having fun!
