Book and Film Clubs

Book and film clubs are ideal for those people who enjoy exercising their minds as well as meeting new people. Meetings are usually held once a month, and bring together a wide range of different people all with a love of books or movies in common. Film clubs meet and watch a film, and then discuss it afterwards over a drink. Similarly, members of book clubs take it in turn to choose a book and discuss it at the following meeting. The membership of these clubs can be very diverse both culturally and in age range. Even if you don't meet many potential dates, it's a great way to widen your social circles and reduce the number of nights you spend at home feeling sorry for yourself.

A number of the larger bookstore chains, such as Borders and Waterstone's hold author talks and poetry nights, which can be an excellent way to meet people with similar literary interests to you. Although they may be held at the bookshop itself, many events are held in quieter bars and pubs; this will give you plenty of opportunity to interact with the other guests. Conversation should be fairly easy; for a start you have your favourite books, authors and poets. Like film clubs, don't worry if you don't meet a potential date, you'll still have a good night out and may meet a few nice friends on the way.
