Open Questions

Open questions are designed to encourage longer answers and allow you to explain or elaborate. Typical open questions usually start with: What, Where, When, Which, Why and How. For example:

  • "What is the most difficult situation you have had to face and how did you handle it?"
  • "Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?"
  • "Tell me about a time when you were faced with problems or stresses that tested your coping skills".
  • "Which aspect of your current job do you enjoy/dislike the most? "
  • "Why have you applied for this particular job?"
  • "How would you describe yourself?"

These questions will give you the opportunity to sell yourself. Think about possible answers before the interview and consider which of the key themes might come up. Focus your responses on the areas that you think will be of interest to the interviewer.
