Hypothetical Questions

Interviewers often use hypothetical questions to test the extent of your experience and knowledge, and to determine your approach to a specific situation or problem. They may ask the question because it is a genuine situation that you will have to face in the job, or it could be just to test your ability to think on your feet. Try to relate these questions to your own experience and, if you are not clear about the complete details of the situation, ask for more information. Example hypothetical questions may include:

  • "How would you deal with ... (a difficult situation)?"
  • "How would you tackle ... (a specific procedure in your field)?"
  • What would you do if a team member were not pulling their weight?
