Tricky Questions

From time to time you may be asked a question about an area of your qualifications or experience that you'd rather be left unexplored.

  • "I see you have a gap of 2 years in your career; why is that?"
  • "Why were you fired from your previous position?"
  • "This position requires a professional diploma. How are you going to make up the shortfall in your qualifications?"

Instead of panicking or trying answer immediately, give yourself a moment to think. You probably have an idea about the areas of questioning that are likely to cause you difficulty; consider them beforehand and be ready to answer them positively.

Avoid being evasive; it is important to have some kind of answer ready rather than leaving the interviewer to come to their own, possibly incorrect, conclusion. You should also bear in mind that in many cases, the interviewer is merely trying to give you the chance explain something they may not be clear about, rather than trying to trip you up.
