Positive Body Language Signs

Knowing the positive body language signs can help you to recognise the signals that someone is interested in you. You can also use them to indicate that you are interested in THEM, without even having to say a word! Some of the most common gestures of attraction are:

  • Looking around the room, and then allowing the gaze to settle on the 'chosen' one
  • Lingering eye contact
  • Running fingers through hair
  • Smoothing of hair or clothes
  • Smiling widely, teeth showing
  • Head tilting to one side
  • Undivided attention and focus
  • Leaning in towards or moving closer to the other person
  • Dilation of pupils
  • Raising or lowering the tone and speed of voice to match the other person
  • Rapid blinking
  • Touching
  • Mirroring the other person's body language

Although many of the body language signals are common to both sexes, some are specifically used by either men or women.

Signals Displayed by Men

  • Moving between the person they are attracted to and everybody else. This is used to create a more intimate space, claim their territory and block other potential rivals.
  • Playing with or touching their earlobes
  • Standing or sitting with their legs apart
  • Standing with their hands on their hips
  • Tucking one or both thumbs into their belt or belt loops, with their hands pointing towards their genitals

Signals Displayed by Women

  • Flicking their hair or twirling it around their fingers
  • Pushing back long sleeves to expose the softer skin on their arms and wrists
  • Licking their lips and showing the tip of their tongue
  • Playing with jewellery - especially stroking a necklace
  • Slowly crossing and uncrossing their legs
  • Crossing their legs towards the object of their desire
  • Stroking the stem of a wine glass or rubbing a pen
  • Rubbing a foot against the table leg
  • Letting a shoe partly slip off their foot and dangling it
