Group Interviews

Group interviews usually follow one of two formats: discussions or practical tasks. Discussion-based interviews require the group to debate and reach a consensus on a topic or a number of topics. A practical-based interview may require the group to design and physically construct something, often under timed conditions. The assessors observe how the group handles the task, and how the individual team members work with each other. This often demonstrates a number of attributes about each applicant:

  • Leadership qualities
  • Persuasive communications
  • Resilience
  • Ability to give constructive criticism
  • Ability to take criticism, constructive or otherwise
  • Self-motivation
  • Ability to relate to other team members
  • Ability to work under stress
  • Remember you are working as a team to complete the task; don't try to score 'points' against the other applicants.
  • Address other applicants by their names.
  • Give your opinion, but let other applicants speak.
  • Don't become argumentative or aggressive, and ignore any applicants who do.
  • Invite other applicants to contribute - especially those who seem quiet or reserved.
