Online Banks

by Edward Smith

There are a growing number of online-only banks in the UK. These banks provide much the same service as more traditional high street banks or Building Societies, however they provide these services through the use of electronic banking and the Internet and do not have branches for their customers to use.

Some more traditional high street banks have also opened online only banks for their customers. These banks often offer lower account fees and higher interest rates as the cost of running an online bank is much lower than maintaining physical bank branches.

Some supermarkets are also starting to offer online banking services, such as Sainsbury's and Tesco, and so do some insurance companies such as First Direct.

The following is a list of some of the online banks available in the UK. The list is not exhaustive, as most banks also offer some form of online banking service alongside their traditional services.

Online Banking

Online Banking is a relatively new phenomenon for personal banking customers, although electronic access to bank services has been available to corporations and business banking customers for many years through a number of different service providers.

The accepted definition of Online Banking nowadays relates to accessing account details, information, making transactions and other normal banking facilities through the use of a home computer or other electronic device that is connected via a network to the bank.
