DVD players have become massively successful - and their recordable cousins look set to follow, with great picture and sound quality giving them a considerable edge over VCRs. And, as more models hit the shops, prices are falling. So is now the right time to buy?
The short answer is there's no reason not to, especially if your VCR has seen better days. And, although confusion over several competing recordable formats has made many buyers cautious, playback compatibility across different machines is starting to improve.
One word of warning, though - DVD recorders are not for the technically faint-hearted. If programming the VCR gives you a headache, using some DVD recorders is enough to make you need a lie-down in a darkened room!
