London Metropolitan University - In Depth

Founded: 2002 from merger of London Guildhall and North London universities - both in turn formed from numbers of older institutions, university status in 1992.

Site: 2 campuses: City Campus with 6 teaching sites in Moorgate, Aldgate and Tower Hill; North Campus based on Holloway Road.

How to get there: Both campuses have good transport connections: City Campus close to four major railway stations, DLR, tube stations and buses; North Campus has rail links to major London stations, tube stations and bus routes.

Special features: Positive attitude to mature students and those with disabilities. Strong community involvement, including community education and information centre.

Academic features: Many courses have links with industrial bodies/companies eg, BBC, Chartered Institute of Insurers, Goldsmiths Company, Reed, FSA. Flexible modular scheme.

Awarding body: London Metropolitan University.

Main undergraduate awards: BA, BEd, BEng, BSc.

Length of courses: 3 years; 4 years (sandwich and language).

Library & information services: 6 libraries; 800,000 volumes in total, 4300 periodicals, 2300 study places. Integrated learning resource (library, media, IT, video-conferencing). Range of IT staff support. Annual expenditure on information provision, £59 per (FTE) student. Specialist collections: Women's Library, TUC Library.

Other learning facilities: Multimedia resources (CD-Rom, workstations, databases etc), IT labs, TV studio, language labs, GIS, specialist wood-working and machine tool labs, state-of-the-art silversmithing & jewellery workshops.

Study abroad: Option for students to spend a period abroad (under 10% do). Formal exchange links with 50 universities and colleges in Europe, 20 elsewhere. Dual qualification (French license) possible for students in legal and economic studies.

Careers: Information, advice and placement. Employability initiative includes LAGREN (law graduates employability network), jobshop, trading-up schemes.

Student advice & services: Student counsellors; chaplain; part-time nurse and doctor; access to solicitor; money advisers; dyslexia support; childcare facilities.

Amenities: Refectories or snack bars on all teaching sites; SU buildings with bars, IV and games rooms, entertainment venue, on-site banking and travel office.

Sporting facilities: Gymnasium, aerobics and dance studios, multigym, weights room; use of Peter May sports centre in north London.

Accommodation: 10% of first year students in university accommodation - priority to first years applying before August deadline who live more than 25 miles from campus, the majority of whom are housed. 1360 places available (self-catering and catered): rent £72-£90 per week self-catering, £94 pw with evening meal; all contracts for 37 weeks. Students live in privately owned accommodation for 2+ years, rents from £70 pw. About 50% of first degree students live at home.

Living expenses budget: Minimum budget of £8000 pa (excluding tuition fees) recommended by university.

Term-time work: University allows term-time work for full-time students. Some work available on campus in SU bars, registries, at one-off events. University-run jobshop.

Financial help: Government funds, awards of £100-£500. Additional help for students with disabilities, with dependants under 16, partners on low income and for single parents. Various special awards. Apply for help to Students Records & Awards Unit.

Tuition fees: Home students up to £1200 pa for first degrees (in 2005). International students pay £6920 pa.
