Historically the primary function of building societies has been to assist their members in buying a home, and to this day the primary business of building societies is to use the money deposited with the society to fund mortgages.
Since a building society is not a commercial business and the primary beneficiary of the society's business is the society's members, mortgages and loans from building societies are often cheaper than from banks and other lending organisations.
