Cases and Overclocking

by Edward Smith

The idea of upgrading the case on your computer can have beneficial effects as well as just improved looks. Some of the cooling properties of the cases enable the CPU to run at a lower temperature to standard thus allowing for better performance.

There are many different types of case and they all include different specification that allow for improved performance within the PC. Water cooling is one example. The idea is that water is passed through tubes to the CPU block, which is mounted on the CPU. As cold water passes over a hot surface the water takes on this heat. As a result the CPU becomes colder. The water is then pumped round the system to the radiator where a combination of heat sink style fins and a large fan cool the water. The water is then returned to the reservoir in a cooled state where it is ready to be pumped around the system once again.

There are certain cases that can adapt to the use of water cooling more than others. There are also aluminum cases on the market which are designed primarily for their weight, although they also have good heat dissipation. Information on these can found from most PC retailers and on the internet.
