The Functional CV

by Edward Smith

This is the main alternative to the chronological C.V. It presents your achievements and work experience, arranged according to function or responsibilities without real attention to chronological order.

This approach adds focus - it allows you to be very clear about the skills you are able to offer and the areas in which you have worked. The actual titles of your jobs and your work history take a less significant position.

This kind of CV is useful if you have limited work experience or have had breaks in your career, as it emphasises your functional skills and experience, rather than career progression.

This approach can also be helpful if you are looking to make a career change because it allows you to emphasise transferable skills that will help you make the transition.
