Speed Dating Tips

  • Feel good about yourself and others will feel good about you.
  • Girls - welcome your date to your table (no matter what he looks like), it will make him feel at ease.
  • Smile - always a great start and a good icebreaker.
  • Hold your head up and make eye contact. It shows openness and confidence.
  • Everyone has something great about them, notice that and compliment them genuinely.
  • Try an unusual question. "What would your best friend say if they knew you were here?" It's a lot better than the "where do you live?" or "what do you do for a living?" (a no-no in itself, see below) that they've heard several times already. It also shows that you have a sense of humour.
  • Participants often fall back on the line "What do you do for a living?" Not everyone is doing work they love and the question may put them on the spot. Asking them what they enjoy doing in their life will allow you to find out more about what makes them tick.
  • One of the most frequent mistakes people make is that they dominate a conversation - remember, it's not all about you!
  • Find out about them - after all people generally enjoy talking about themselves and feel flattered when someone shows an interest in them.
  • Don't give out any personal details, such as your last name, telephone number or email address. If you've both ticked each other on your lists, the organisers will make sure you both have everything you need in order to catch up again.
  • It's almost inevitable that some of the people you meet will not be right for you, but they are human beings and deserve your respect and courtesy. They've paid to meet you too!
