Advertisements

We've all seen them - those small ads in the back of the local newspaper which hopeful men and women describe their personality, hopes and dreams in a few words and some choice acronyms.

Unfortunately, personal ads do have a reputation as being a bit of a joke, but whilst some of us may scoff at them, they can work. One of the big advantages of meeting someone this way is that you're both in the same boat - looking for love - so you can be honest about what you want.

As with any type of dating, you must follow the basic safety guidelines, and unless you choose a respectable magazine or newspaper it might be better initially to respond to - rather than place - an ad, just to be on the safe side.

A word of warning though: remember that just because you might find someone appealing it doesn't mean they will automatically think the same about you! You can't assume that just because someone has replied to an ad that they aren't picky about who they meet - it could be the complete opposite in fact: Some people are often single for the very reason that they are incredibly hard to please.
