The Ascendant

Your Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign of the zodiac that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment that you were born, and is placed on the left side of the birthchart. It is always the sign on the cusp of the first house and is the most important factor in astrological divination - without the Ascendant a true birthchart cannot be erected. It is the starting point of the chart and the starting point in a person's life. This sign changes approximately every two hours, and so twins born five minutes apart could have different ascendants, giving them a real difference in their horoscopes and their personalities.

The Rising Sign and its ruling planet provide most of the information about our outer personality and appearance. Where the Sun establishes our character, or who we really are, our Rising sign determines our personality, or what we show the world as we deal with it. It indicates how we are perceived by others and the general impact we make within our lives.

Each of the 12 signs form a Rising Sign Personality when placed on the Ascendant. Earth and Water signs tend to display a quiet, introspective image, whereas Fire and Air signs usually show a more confident, extrovert exterior. However, the outer personality as projected by the Ascendant may not have any bearing on the true character. The more planets that are situated in the Ascendant (first house), the more likely the individual's true self will be similar to their Ascendant. For example, a person born with three planets, including the ruler, around a Le Ascendant is more likely to act in a typically Le manner than someone who has Le rising with no planets in the first house.

Estimate Your Rising Sign

Find the row that matches your birth time (remember to check & allow for daylight saving or summer time) and follow it along until you come to the column matching your Sun Sign. The sign shown is your Rising Sign, unless you were born in a very high latitude, or on a cusp, or at a time when signs are changing.
