In the past decade or so, the number of people renting in Britain - and the number of properties available to rent - has increased enormously. This was first triggered by the recession of the early 1990s. More recently, the rising property prices, especially in the southeast of England, increased the number of people unable to afford a mortgage, and therefore increased demand for rental accommodation.
Letting out property has become an attractive option for long-term investment and a useful short-term solution if you have to move but are reluctant to sell.
