There is no single unified theory of astrology, and different cultures practice their own form, some of the most well known being Western, Chinese, Vedic and Hindu. Even within Western Astrology, there is a wide range of philosophies.
Natal Astrology
Natal Astrology seeks to make predictions and analysis based on the date of a person's birth, and this is most people's perception of what astrology is.
The birthchart shows the basic building blocks that make up an individual's own unique and complex personality. It reveals a personality profile of our talents, strengths and weaknesses, dreams and fears. A consultation with a professional astrologer can reveal valuable insights about who we are, how we think, and how we react to the dilemmas we experience in life.
This can be a tremendously positive experience, as it can shed light on areas of our lives that we don't often acknowledge. This can lead us to finding a new level of self-understanding, which can give us the motivation to make positive changes in our lives.

Electional Astrology
Electional astrology is the technique used to decide upon the most auspicious day and time for a particular event to take place.
After determining the nature of the event to take place, it is decided what astrological factors would be most significant to ensure the success of that event. Then the most suitable date and time for the event is found, or at least the one that has the most favourable aspects and the least unfavourable ones.
This branch of astrology can be used to plan any event that has a definite starting moment, such as wedding dates, house moves and new business launches.
Horary Astrology
This is a technique used to answer a specific question by using astrological guidance. The questions must be specific and personal to the questioner, such as:
Is this a good time to ask for a pay rise?
Will I sell my house in the next 3 months?
Should I start a new business now, or wait?
The time that the question first occurs to the questioner is taken as the 'birth' of the question, and using that time and place, a birthchart for the question is drawn up. This is then interpreted with regard to the questioner's birthchart to provide an answer.
Synastry
There is a whole branch of astrology devoted to the study of the way people are likely to get on with each other. By comparing different birth charts, an astrologer can discover insights about the kind of people the subject will get on with and the dynamics that will emerge in the relationship. It examines what each party wants from the relationship, and shows how each party perceives the other, and highlights both the strengths and weaknesses of that particular partnership.
Any type of relationship can be studied - romantic, friendship, business, parent-child or sibling-sibling.
