Cancelling The Engagement

Getting married is a huge commitment, and it's not unreasonable to have some pre-wedding nerves. However, if the relationship really does come to an end, family and friends should be informed by word of mouth, tactfully and with discretion. There is no need to feel that the reasons for breaking the engagement need to be discussed - it is in fact inappropriate to do so.

If the man calls off the wedding, it is usually expected that the girl should keep the engagement ring, as it was given to her as a gift, and is considered her "property". However, if the bride calls off the wedding, it's appropriate for her to give it back. If the ring was a family heirloom, it should be returned, regardless of why and by whom the wedding was cancelled.
