Re-marriage and the Society of Friends

Although Quakers believe in the sanctity and life-long nature of marriage, they are understanding of and sympathetic to those who have been divorced and wish to marry in a Friends' meeting.

The monthly meetings are given discretion as to whether or not permission should be granted to those who wish to re-marry in a Friends' meeting, and they are not willing to consider the question of re-marriage without all the circumstances being taken into account. The monthly meeting will need to be sure that they are clear of past commitments, ready to enter a new marriage, with its solemn life-long promise, and that the situation and feelings of any children have been fully considered. It is possible that the matter might be investigated by a small group of Friends so that the monthly meeting might be advised by them without the need to reveal all the circumstances in public.
