Sony's 128-bit video game console launched in Japan in March 2000 and in North America and Europe in October and November 2000 respectively. The PS2 went on to become the fastest selling and most popular gaming console in history, with over 115 million units shipped worldwide by the end of 2006 - 44 million in Europe alone. It was succeeded by the PlayStation 3 in November 2006 (March 2007 in Europe).
