Server

A computer or group of computers that hosts a game. This may simply be one player's personal computer or it may consist of a remote computer used specifically to enable many players to connect to the game.

In online games, players may have to select one server to create their character and stay there. For example, in World of Warcraft, servers are known as 'realms', with players able to create up to 10 characters on each realm (up to a maximum of 50). Each realm offers one of four different types of gameplay:

Thus, players can choose a realm (server) that suits their type of gameplay. Game creators give names to the servers for easy communication between and with players. In WoW, the server known as Mannoroth offers PvP play, whilst Uldum is a PvE server.

Players are recommended to find out where each server is located, as choosing a server that is located closer to them in real life will give them a faster connection speed, and therefore, less lag. For example, in the MMORPG City of Heroes, the servers Freedom and Liberty are based on the East coast of the US, whilst Champion and Justice are located in California.
