Scrolling

A technique whereby the screen is moved smoothly in a particular direction. This may be carried out in PC games by moving the scroll wheel on the mouse or clicking on scroll-bars on the sides of menus.

The term is also used to describe games in which the screen moves (scrolls) from left to right or from bottom to top regardless of what the player is doing. If the player moves too slowly they either die or are shunted along at the edge of the screen and encounter whatever obstacles are next in the scene. This technique is most commonly used in scrolling platform-games or scrolling beat-em-ups.
