Leet

Also known as Leetspeak or 1337, leet is a type of language used by gamers, derived from the word Elite, meaning 'better than the rest', and generally used in online gaming chats.

One form of leet replaces letters with symbols on a keyboard. For example:

  • O would be replaced with 0
  • I would be replaced with 1
  • Z would be replaced with 2
  • E would be replaced with 3
  • A would be replaced with 4
  • S would be replaced with 5
  • G would be replaced with 6
  • T would be replaced with 7
  • B would be replaced with 8
  • P would be replaced with 9

Many other transliterations exist, such as:

  • M replaced with /\/\
  • X replaced with ><

Another aspect of leet is the use of common mistyping such as 'teh' or 't3h' (for the), and intentional misspellings, especially the 'z' at the end of words ('skillz'). Other examples include:

  • evar, evah, and eva (for ever)
  • ma or mah (for my)
  • J00 (for you)

Words from other languages are also used in leet, such as the German 'ist' for is and 'uber' for great or superior (for example, "Iceblade ist uberstrong").
