Usually in the loft, the cold water tank can be wrapped in a purpose-made jacket. Also, if it doesn't have one, make a lid to cover the tank - use a sheet of expanded polystyrene 25 mm (1 in) thick.
Where there is a vent pipe from the hot water cylinder below discharging into the top of the tank, make a hole in the polystyrene for a plastic funnel so that any water coming from the pipe will still be directed into the tank. Do not insulate the loft floor below the tank, as warm air rising from the room below will help to prevent the water in the tank from freezing.
